Diagnostic Testing
At Rooted we use diagnostic testing thoughtfully and strategically to help uncover the cause of symptoms, guide personalized treatment plans, and monitor progress over time. Our goal is not to order unnecessary testing, but to recommend investigations that provide meaningful clinical insight and help move your care forward.
Your naturopathic doctor will discuss which testing options may be most appropriate based on your symptoms, health history, and goals. We also welcome conversations about any testing you are interested in exploring.
Blood Testing
The majority of testing that we recommended is blood work! Naturopathic doctors in Ontario can order many of the same laboratory tests as medical doctors. Blood work can provide valuable information about hormone health, thyroid function, nutrient status, inflammation, blood sugar regulation, cardiovascular risk factors, and more.
Testing is completed through LifeLabs or Dynacare laboratories.
Please note:
Blood work ordered by an ND is not covered by OHIP
Pricing varies depending on the tests ordered, and is paid at Rooted at the time of your visit.
We recommend booking appointments directly with LifeLabs to reduce wait times
Functional & Specialty Laboratory Testing
Functional and specialty laboratory testing can sometimes provide additional insight into complex or chronic health concerns, particularly when conventional testing does not fully explain a patient’s symptoms. These tests may explore areas such as digestive health, hormone metabolism, nutrient status, stress physiology, and metabolic function.
However, we also recognize that more testing is not always better.
The wellness industry has increasingly shifted toward large panels and excessive testing that may not always be evidence based, clinically actionable, or necessary. Functional testing can sometimes lead to over interpretation, fear based recommendations, or treatment plans that are overly restrictive or unsustainable.
At Rooted, we take a balanced and evidence informed approach.
We use specialty testing selectively and thoughtfully when:
- Results are likely to meaningfully change treatment decisions
- Conventional testing has not provided sufficient answers
- Symptoms are persistent, complex, or not responding as expected
- Additional data may help personalize care more effectively
We also place strong emphasis on clinical assessment, symptom patterns, medical history, and foundational health strategies — not just lab numbers.
Before recommending any functional test, your naturopathic doctor will discuss:
- Why the test may be helpful
- What its limitations are
- Whether results are clinically actionable
- The expected cost and value
- Alternative options when appropriate
Our goal is to help patients make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary testing, while still using advanced tools when they may genuinely improve outcomes and understanding.
